Language Therapy
S.L. Hunter SpeechWorks provides language therapy for children and adults who experience challenges with understanding, expressing, or using language effectively. Our registered Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) assess communication skills, language development, and individual communication needs to determine whether speech and language therapy may be appropriate.
Language difficulties can affect daily life, learning, relationships, and confident communication. Our speech therapists provide personalized care and develop individualized treatment plans based on each person's strengths, goals, and communication challenges.
Language and Communication Difficulties
A language disorder can affect how a person understands language, uses words and sentences, follows conversations, or communicates ideas. Language difficulties may occur alongside a speech disorder, speech delay, autism spectrum disorder, brain injury, cognitive communication disorders, or other communication disorders.
Language concerns may include:
- Language delay or a limited vocabulary
- Difficulty putting words together
- Expressive disorders affecting spoken or written language
- Receptive disorders affecting understanding
- Challenges with social communication
- Difficulties with communication development
- Changes in adult speech or language following neurological injury
- Difficulty participating in conversations, school, work, or family activities
For children, an initial assessment can help clarify a child's language development, child's communication development, and overall speech and language development. Early intervention and early support may help families better understand how to support communication as children learning new language skills progress.
Speech and Language Assessment
Our Speech-Language Pathologists provide speech assessment and language assessment to understand a person's communication needs.
Assessment may consider:
- Receptive and expressive language skills
- Speech clarity
- Speech development
- Communication difficulties
- Cognitive communication
- Social communication
- Articulation difficulties
- Fluency disorders
- Voice disorders
- Functional speech and language use
Some children may also have difficulty producing specific sounds or certain sounds. When appropriate, articulation therapy may be recommended alongside language services.
Our team includes experienced Speech-Language Pathologists and Communicative Disorders Assistants. Treatment recommendations are based on the assessment rather than assuming that every person with communication challenges requires the same therapy programs.
Personalized Language Therapy Services
Our language therapy services and broader speech therapy services are designed around meaningful communication goals. A speech therapy session may work on understanding language, expanding vocabulary, constructing sentences, organizing ideas, conversation skills, or functional communication.
Depending on the person's needs, targeted therapy may include:
- Building receptive and expressive language skills
- Supporting speech and language development
- Improving functional communication skills
- Developing strategies for communication challenges
- Supporting social communication
- Improving participation at home, school, work, or in the community
- Teaching strategies that family members can use between therapy sessions
For families beginning services, the first speech therapy session follows an assessment and treatment-planning process so therapy can address the individual's specific goals.
Pediatric and Adult Speech Therapy
Our services include pediatric speech therapy and adult speech therapy.
For children, therapy may address a child's speech, language delay, speech challenges, articulation disorders, or broader communication development. With appropriate assessment and support, children benefit from strategies that can be practised in a supportive environment with parents, caregivers, educators, and other professionals.
For adults, speech language therapy may address language difficulties associated with brain injury, neurological conditions, or other changes affecting communication.
Our experienced Speech-Language Pathologists provide support tailored to each person's abilities and priorities rather than using a single approach for every communication difficulty.
Related Speech-Language Pathology Services
Because speech language pathology covers several areas of communication and swallowing, some individuals may require services beyond language therapy. Concerns involving swallowing function, swallowing difficulties, vocal strain, articulation disorders, or fluency may require a different or additional assessment.
Our registered speech language professionals can help identify which language services, speech therapy services, or other supports are appropriate.
Group Therapy
Group Therapy provides a functional setting where participants can practise language and communication skills with more than one person. Group programs can complement individual therapy when appropriate and provide opportunities to practise communication in a supportive environment.
