Personalized Stuttering Therapy Programs
S.L. Hunter SpeechWorks provides speech therapy for stuttering for children, adolescents, and adults. Stuttering therapy is individualized based on the person’s speech patterns, communication skills, age, experiences, and personal goals.
A Speech-Language Pathologist can assess stuttering and other fluency disorders to better understand how they affect speech, communication, confidence, and daily activities. Following an assessment, the speech therapist can recommend a therapy approach appropriate for the individual. Treatment may include education about stuttering, direct therapy, communication strategies, and opportunities to practise speaking in different situations.
For children who stutter, therapy may involve parents and caregivers so that communication strategies can also be supported at home. Therapy for school-aged children may focus on communication, feelings about speaking, participation at school, and building confidence. Adult stuttering therapy may focus on communication goals related to work, relationships, social situations, and everyday conversation.

Family Communication Skills Therapy
Family Communication Skills Therapy combines indirect and direct therapy approaches for children who stutter and their families. Parents can learn strategies that support comfortable, effective communication during everyday conversation and play.
When a child stutters, family involvement can help create supportive opportunities for communication without placing unnecessary pressure on the child’s speech. Treatment is adapted to the child's needs rather than using one approach for every child.
Fluency Plus Program
The Fluency Plus Program was developed for children with confirmed stuttering. The program provides structured stuttering therapy based on the child’s individual speech and communication needs.
Therapy may help children develop an understanding of their speech, practise communication techniques, and build confidence across different speaking situations. Depending on the individual, a Speech-Language Pathologist may introduce strategies related to speech rate, easier speech production, or other approaches used in speech therapy for stuttering.
Lidcombe
The Lidcombe Program is a behavioural treatment for young children who stutter. Parents or caregivers participate in treatment and use strategies in the child’s everyday environment with guidance from a Speech-Language Pathologist.
The program follows a structured, step-by-step approach while allowing treatment to reflect the needs of the individual child and family. Regular therapy sessions provide opportunities to evaluate progress, discuss questions, and adjust treatment when appropriate.
Palin Parent-Child Interaction Therapy
Palin Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCI) is a combined indirect and direct treatment approach for young children who stutter, generally aged seven years and under, and their families.
The therapy approach focuses on interaction and communication within everyday family life. Parents learn ways to support their child’s communication while the Speech-Language Pathologist helps identify strategies that are appropriate for the child.
Individualized Speech Therapy for Stuttering
There are different approaches to stuttering treatment, and the most appropriate approach depends on the individual. Some therapy programs may incorporate techniques associated with fluency shaping, stuttering modification, or strategies such as gentle onset, while other programs place greater focus on communication confidence, education, and participation.
The goal of therapy is not to place pressure on a person to speak fluently at all times. Instead, treatment can help people who stutter better understand their speech, develop useful communication skills and strategies, and feel supported when communicating.
For some clients, individual therapy may be appropriate, while others may benefit from opportunities such as group therapy when available and clinically appropriate. Treatment recommendations are based on assessment, age group, communication needs, and personal goals.
Our team supports children and adults with stuttering through personalized assessment, treatment, education, and practice. Therapy can address speech, fluency, communication, confidence, and participation in everyday life.
