Voice Therapy

Expert Voice Therapy Services

S.L. Hunter SpeechWorks provides individualized voice therapy for people experiencing changes in voice quality, vocal fatigue, muscle tension, hoarseness, or other voice disorders. Our Speech-Language Pathologists assess how the voice is being produced and develop a treatment plan based on the individual’s voice problem, vocal health, communication needs, and goals.

Voice is produced when air moves through the voice box, or larynx, causing the vocal folds to vibrate and create sound. Changes to the vocal cords, breathing patterns, muscle tension, or patterns of voice use can affect how the voice sounds and feels.

Voice therapy may support clients with concerns such as vocal nodules, vocal fold nodules, vocal fatigue, muscle tension, reduced vocal range, breathy or raspy voice quality, and other vocal cord lesions identified by an appropriate health-care professional. Vocal nodules voice therapy may focus on improving voice production, reducing unnecessary vocal strain, developing healthy habits, and supporting more efficient voice use.

Please find some of our Voice Therapy services below:

Group Therapy

Group therapy can provide a functional setting for clients to learn and practise new voice skills. Sessions may provide opportunities to use strategies in conversation, develop awareness of voice use, and build confidence using a healthy voice in realistic speaking situations.

Group services may be appropriate for some clients depending on their assessment, treatment goals, and individual needs.

Laryngeal Massage

Laryngeal massage is a technique used to address excessive tension in muscles surrounding the larynx. For some clients, muscle tension can contribute to vocal fatigue, discomfort, or changes in voice quality.

When clinically appropriate, laryngeal massage may be incorporated into voice therapy alongside breathing, voice production, and vocal hygiene strategies.

Resonant Voice Therapy

Resonant Voice Therapy is an approach designed to promote efficient voice production while minimizing unnecessary strain on the vocal folds. Therapy may focus on comfortable vibration, breath support, pitch, and the way the voice sounds and feels during speaking.

The goal is to help clients develop voice-production strategies that support healthy and sustainable communication.

Voice Lab

S.L. Hunter SpeechWorks offers a specialized Voice Lab with videostroboscopy and Visi-Pitch Acoustic Analysis. These tools can provide information about vocal fold vibration, pitch, voice quality, and other characteristics of voice production.

Voice assessment can help guide treatment and may support collaboration with other health-care professionals when additional medical assessment is needed.

Voice Therapy for Vocal Nodules and Other Voice Concerns

Vocal cord nodules are noncancerous growths that can develop on the vocal folds and may affect how the vocal cords vibrate. Vocal nodules are different from vocal cord polyps and vocal cord cysts, and appropriate assessment is important before determining treatment.

Depending on the individual, treatment for a diagnosed voice condition may involve voice therapy, changes to voice use, vocal hygiene, and collaboration with medical professionals. Voice rest or surgery may be recommended in some circumstances by the appropriate medical provider, but they are not required for every voice disorder.

Therapy may include strategies related to breath support, reducing throat clearing, managing vocal strain, and establishing healthy voice habits. Clients may also learn how factors such as speaking for long periods, screaming, or other demanding patterns of voice use can affect vocal health.

These services may be particularly helpful for professional voice users, including teachers, singers, professional singers, and others who rely heavily on their voice for work or daily activities.

Our Speech-Language Pathologists use assessment findings, current research, and the client’s goals to develop an individualized treatment plan. The focus is on supporting efficient voice production, improving communication, and helping clients protect their vocal health over time.
