How Speech-Language Pathology Can Help

Communication challenges can affect speaking, understanding, relationships and everyday activities. Assessment helps identify relevant concerns and guide individualized treatment and communication strategies.

Memory and Cognitive Communication

After a concussion or traumatic brain injury, some people experience changes in attention, memory, planning, organization, processing information or cognitive fatigue. Cognitive communication therapy can support everyday conversations, listening, word-finding and strategies for expressing thoughts clearly.

Speech and Language

Speech and language difficulties may affect speech clarity, understanding instructions, finding words or communicating in social situations. Speech-language pathologists assess motor speech and language disorders, including difficulties that can occur following a stroke or brain injury.

For example, aphasia can affect speaking or understanding language. Therapy is tailored to the person's abilities and communication goals.

Voice

Voice disorders or changes in vocal quality, pitch, volume, comfort or endurance may follow illness, injury or intubation. Assessment can help determine whether voice therapy may support everyday communication and individual voice goals.

Swallowing

Swallowing difficulties may affect eating and drinking. Speech-language pathologists can evaluate swallowing concerns, including dysphagia (a swallowing disorder), and provide education, appropriate treatment strategies or recommendations for further assessment and referral.

Gender-Affirming Voice and Communication

Individualized support can help clients explore voice, resonance, speech patterns and non-verbal communication in ways that reflect their gender identity, expression and personal goals.

When to Reach Out

You do not need to know the clinical name for a difficulty before contacting our clinic. You may recognize experiences such as:

  • Losing track of conversations or having trouble remembering instructions.
  • Needing more time to organize or explain thoughts.
  • Finding that noise, fatigue or stress makes communication harder.
  • Noticing changes in speech clarity, voice or word-finding.
  • Wanting communication or voice to better reflect your gender.
  • Coughing, choking or having difficulty when eating or drinking.
  • Experiencing communication challenges at work or in relationships.
  • Wanting strategies to help family members communicate more effectively.

Eligible speech-language pathology services, including gender-affirming voice and communication care, may be funded through Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC).
