SL Hunter SpeechWorks is excited to offer the following workshop and continuing education opportunities:

PRESCHOOL SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY: PLAYING A VITAL ROLE IN PRESCHOOLER’S COMMUNICATION DEVELOPMENT

Time: 2 hours

Intended Audience: Early educators, parents, caregivers

Overview: This workshop will provide you with information on language milestones and “red flags” for communication delays. As well, key strategies for supporting communication development will be explored. For those interested, a more in-depth workshop can be provided upon request that explores pre-literacy and sound awareness skills (additional fees may apply).

COMMUNICATION CONCERNS IN THE CLASSROOM: THE ELEMENTARY YEARS (K-4)

Time: 3 hours

Intended Audience: Educators – full time teachers, occasional teachers, contract teachers, educational assistants

Overview: Using case studies/scenarios, videos of clients, and a Q&A format, this workshop explores the following topics in the K-4 population: How to recognize the red flags, when to refer for speech-language therapy, how to approach parents diplomatically and professionally with your concerns about their child, integrating strategies/cueing techniques from the SLP into the teaching day without creating more work, and how to work collaboratively with Speech-Language Pathologists to streamline teaching approaches to suit the child’s needs.

ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY IN THE ADOLESCENT YEARS

Time: 4 hours

Intended Audience: Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Rehabilitation Support Workers

Overview: Adolescents with acquired brain injury present with a unique set of challenges across the rehabilitation continuum – from assessment through the reintegration process. This population falls into the infamous gap between child and adult assessment batteries, resources, and approaches. In this workshop we will discuss relevant assessment batteries; collaboration with school teams; integrating high school/post secondary curriculum; relevant times of transition; advocacy; the unique adolescent issues that require creative approaches as we work towards reintegration into real life contexts; and supporting these clients and their families to optimize their journey into adulthood.

DYSPHAGIA IN LONG-TERM CARE – SWALLOWING AND FEEDING TRAINING

Time: 1 hour

Intended Audience: Nursing staff, kitchen/feeding staff, personal support workers, dieticians and anyone else directly involved in the management of swallowing disorders in the long-term care setting

Overview: This workshop will provide you with information on correct feeding techniques and proper diet modification preparation techniques aimed at increasing mealtime safety and consistent application of SLP recommendations, as well as increasing resident feeding independence.

TRAINING THE TRAINER: DYSPHAGIA IN LONG-TERM CARE – SWALLOWING AND FEEDING TECHNIQUES

Time: 2 hours

Intended Audience: Nursing staff, kitchen/feeding staff, personal support workers, dieticians and anyone else directly involved in the management of swallowing disorders in the long-term care setting

Overview: This workshop is an extension of the Dysphagia in Long-Term Care – Swallowing and Feeding Training workshop. This workshop contains an extended/more in-depth review of the content from the first workshop and is intended for those who are interested in learning the skills required to train other staff at their facility on the feeding and diet modification techniques discussed in the first workshop. Additional bonus material includes:
